If you look at your receipt for your prescription, you’ll see a charge called a dispensing fee. This is common at all pharmacies in Ontario. While many people have heard about this fee and have been paying them for years, there is still some confusion about what they are and why we have charged them. In this blog, we’ll explain what a dispensing fee is and how they work.

What is a dispensing fee?

A dispensing fee is a charge applied by pharmacies every time they fill a prescription. You will be charged a fee for each prescription, not one fee per transaction. For example, if you have to fill three prescriptions, you will be charged a dispensing fee three times on your receipt.

Some health insurance policies will not only cover the cost of your prescription (minus the co-pay), but they will also cover the dispensing fee. Some insurers will cover a percentage of the dispensing fee, like how they may cover a certain percentage of your medication costs. How much is covered will depend on your plan type and benefits plan.

How much are dispensing fees?

How dispensing fees are calculated can vary by the pharmacy. It is up to the individual location how much they will charge. Generally, they either charge you a flat fee per prescription (for example, $7 per prescription) or a percentage of the total cost of the prescription (for example, 10% of the cost of the prescription).

Rates vary based on many factors. A pharmacy is just like any other business and these fees are tied to the overall costs to run the business. Some charge lower fees to get a competitive advantage over other local pharmacies.

Many pharmacies will list dispensing fees in the store. If you are not sure how they work, ask your pharmacist.

What do dispensing fees cover?

Dispensing fees are a way for them to receive compensation for a variety of business activities.

The fee is meant to cover the services that are provided to patrons. For example, the medical advice and personalized consultations you receive from pharmacists. Here are some of the business activities that are supported by dispensing fees:

Medication storage (refrigeration)

Maintaining customer records

Labels and medication packaging and containers

Inventory management

Time spent dispensing and preparing prescriptions

Other operations costs

If you have questions about the dispensing fees with Silver Scripts, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Our pharmacists will happily provide you with more information.

Technology continues to play a more prominent role in all aspects of our lives. You see it in schools, at work, and the home. One area where there have also been significant technological advancements in recent years is pharmacy. Pharmacies have been able to utilize modern technology to evolve how they operate and serve their customer base. Strides have been made to make it easier and more efficient for people to fill, manage and monitor their prescription and medication needs.

Below, our pharmacists outline some of the top technology advancements in pharmacy:

Pharmacy apps

Many pharmacies are now offering their patrons the ability to manage all their prescriptions and medications from one app that is accessible via their smartphones. You can request refills, see the status of your medication, and have access to many other convenient features.

Medication reminder devices

Remembering to take your medication at the right time and the appropriate dosage is necessary. But we also know that it can be easy to forget to take your pills. Medication reminder devices help people remember to take their medication. There are several devices on the market, but increasingly pharmacies are including this capability in an app you can access from your phone.

Automated customer outreach

Using customer relationship management (CRM) software, pharmacies are using digital tools to manage customer interactions through a variety of channels online, including social media, email, and text messaging. Customers receive useful information from the pharmacy, health tips, and other information that is customized to the specific customer.

Automated dispensing cabinets

Many pharmacies have made the switch to automated dispensing cabinets to control and monitor drug distribution. This technology helps to reduce human error, increase fill time, and frees up more time for pharmacists and staff to provide service to patrons.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM)

This is an online platform that is used to manage a patient’s medication. This allows pharmacists to review people’s prescriptions and address any medication issues (if any). This can help reduce redundancy, ensure medications are taken correctly and avoid prescriptions that could interfere with each other. Pharmacists can use this information to provide consultation to the patient and/or caregiver.

The Online Pharmacy

Like many other service-based businesses, many pharmacies are moving many of the services they offer to customers online. No longer do you need to physically go into the pharmacy. You can do everything you previously did in the pharmacy from the comfort of your own home. All you will need is a computer, tablet, or smartphone. This is ideal for people with mobility issues or does not have transportation.

Enjoying the tech benefits by registering with Silver Scripts today!

Silver Scripts uses advanced verification technology to enhance medication accuracy. We offer a convenient and easy-to-use app for you to use after registration. It allows you to manage your account, medications, and refills online. Download it today on the Apple Store or Google Play.
